Baumann’s contribution reframed the slowdown in biotech layoffs that began in late 2024. Rather than a straightforward sign of recovery, he suggested, the deceleration partly reflects that many larger biopharma companies have already conducted an overdue appraisal of their strategies – and that, at the biggest players, there simply is not as much left to cut. Pointing to major restructurings such as those at Novo Nordisk and Bayer, he cautioned that the real risk is not the layoff itself but the company that reduces headcount without revisiting the strategy that made those roles redundant in the first place.
