Pashazadeh’s argument is that the apparent surge in Chinese innovation is not sudden at all – it reflects two decades of logical progression from generics manufacturing to complex therapeutics to novel drug discovery. What has genuinely changed, he suggests, is that long-standing Western scepticism about Chinese-generated data is finally being tested against results the market can no longer discount. A molecule, in his framing, has no nationality: the meaningful differences between Western and Chinese development are structural rather than scientific – bureaucracy, silos and a reluctance to accept early failure that slow Western programs without improving them. He cautions that companies unwilling to adapt risk a “Nokia moment,” in which the product still works but the market has already moved on.
